Lakes and Lake Towns Across Austria's Alpine Shores

22 guides

Carinthia carries much of the weight here: the Wörthersee runs as a chain of shore towns from the edge of Klagenfurt toward Velden, and Villach sits between three separate lakes, Faaker See just south, long Ossiacher See, and quiet Weissensee in the Gailtal Alps. Zell am See compresses the same idea into one compact Alpine lake, with a town on the west shore, three official lidos and sightseeing boats. The Salzkammergut is the other center, and it behaves differently: more than 67 lakes, and, as the lakes here show, they are not interchangeable — Hallstätter See for the village and salt mine, Mondsee and Fuschlsee for the easiest swims.

Where it trips people up is scale. Lake Neusiedl is shallow and wrapped in a wide reed belt, and only Podersdorf am See gives direct open-water access, so a beach day and a reed-belt walk are different plans. Lake Constance is a short Vorarlberg shoreline centered on Bregenz, with a floating festival stage, a cable car to 1,064 meters and four lidos — not a whole coast to tour. The alpine lakes above lakes like Gosausee and Plansee reward a car or a bus leg more than a spontaneous stop.

  • Salzkammergut Lakes: Which Lake to Pick and What Each Is Like

The Salzkammergut holds more than 67 lakes, and they are not interchangeable. Hallstätter See is for the village and the salt mine, Mondsee and Fuschlsee are the easiest swims, and the smaller lakes reward anyone with a car and an hour to spare. This guide runs through each lake's character, its beaches and boat options, and how it fits a route from Salzburg or Bad Ischl.

Traunsee is a long Salzkammergut lake with Gmunden at the north end, Traunkirchen on the western shore and Ebensee at the south, all under the Traunstein. Plan the shore town by town, ride the train along the water, and treat the Grünberg attractions above Gmunden as a separate paid stop.

  • Wolfgangsee: Towns, Boats and the Schafberg

Wolfgangsee is the Salzkammergut lake with three distinct shore towns: St. Gilgen at the western end, St. Wolfgang in the middle below the Schafberg, and Strobl on the quieter eastern shore.
