Landesgalerie Niederösterreich: A Visitor's Guide to the Krems Museum

The Landesgalerie Niederösterreich is Lower Austria's main gallery for Austrian art, housed in a curved, four-level building at Museumsplatz 1 in Krems an der Donau. It keeps the same hours as its neighbors: Tuesday to Sunday from 10am to 5pm, with Mondays open only when a public holiday falls on that day. Allow roughly two hours for the galleries.

The museum sits inside the Kunstmeile, a compact strip of institutions on the edge of Krems-Stein, and that placement is what shapes a visit. The Kunstmeile sells one ticket covering all of its museums, so a single day can combine the gallery with the Kunsthalle Krems and the Karikaturmuseum Krems next door.

Where the Landesgalerie sits in Krems

The address is Museumsplatz 1, 3500 Krems an der Donau, in the Krems-Stein district. The gallery, the Kunsthalle and the Karikaturmuseum all share the Museumsplatz, which makes the cluster easy to cover on foot.

Our Krems Attractions: 10 Visitor Guides sets the gallery against the town's churches, towers and museums. The Kunstmeile itself spreads over two districts: the Landesgalerie, the Kunsthalle and the Karikaturmuseum share the Museumsplatz, while the Forum Frohner sits separately at Minoritenplatz 4 in Krems-Stein, a few minutes farther on.

Getting there from the old town and the Danube

From Krems's old town, walk through the pedestrian streets past the Steiner Tor and continue toward the Danube; the museum district begins on the edge of Krems-Stein, near the river. Drivers park near the ship landing opposite the traffic circle in front of the Landesgalerie, which puts the main entrance a short walk away.

Cyclists have the easiest approach of all, because the Danube cycle path runs along the riverbank, with signposted links into the Kunstmeile. Arriving by train puts you in Krems an der Donau, and the walk from the station through the old town to Museumsplatz is straightforward.

What's inside: the building and its exhibition floors

The Landesgalerie Niederösterreich opened in 2019 in a building by the architects Marte.Marte, and its four levels hold around 3,000 square meters of exhibition space. The curved facades were designed to fit into the surrounding wine-country townscape while still reading as a contemporary landmark, and the building is part of the draw.

Inside, the gallery shows a mix of works from the Lower Austrian collections and temporary exhibitions. A cafe is part of the building, which makes it a workable pause between the Landesgalerie Niederösterreich and the museums next door.

Exhibitions to plan around

The Kunstmeile lists its shows well ahead on its own program page. The published schedule includes Robert Rauschenberg: Image and Gesture at the Kunsthalle Krems from 25 April to 1 November 2026, and VIENNA MODERNISM. FEMININE. RESISTANT at the Landesgalerie Niederösterreich from 11 April 2026 to 10 January 2027. Always confirm the current running dates before you travel.

The same Kunstmeile program includes Dieser Haderer at the Karikaturmuseum Krems, an anniversary show from 18 July 2026 to 30 June 2027. Because the two museums sit on the same square, the anniversary show is an easy add-on to a Landesgalerie visit.

Opening hours and the Monday closure

The Landesgalerie Niederösterreich keeps Tuesday to Sunday hours from 10am to 5pm and stays closed on Mondays unless that Monday is a public holiday, in which case it opens on the holiday schedule. Plan museum days around that weekly gap rather than the reverse.

Its neighbors on the Kunstmeile keep slightly different schedules. The Karikaturmuseum Krems opens every day from 10am to 5pm, while the Forum Frohner in Krems-Stein runs Tuesday to Sunday from 11am to 5pm and is currently closed for renovation, with a new exhibition opening on 7 November 2026.

Tickets and the Kunstmeile combined ticket

Sponsored

If you want to see more than one museum, the Kunstmeile sells one ticket covering all of its institutions, so you can string together the gallery, the Kunsthalle Krems and the cartoon museum on a single ticket.

The combination is the practical choice on a Kunstmeile day: pick the museums you want, then work out your route across the Museumsplatz so you are not doubling back between buildings.

How long to allow and how to combine the museums

Give the Landesgalerie Niederösterreich about two hours for a normal visit. The galleries sit across four levels, so a slow climb with stops uses far more time than a quick loop of the main halls.

Pair the gallery with a walk back through the old town and a late lunch, so the museum visit anchors a half-day rather than filling it.

Nearby: Kunsthalle, Karikaturmuseum and museumkrems

The Kunsthalle Krems is the neighboring contemporary art museum at Museumsplatz 5, a few steps from the Landesgalerie. The Karikaturmuseum Krems at Museumsplatz 3 shows caricature and critical drawing and opens daily, so it can fill the Monday slot when the gallery is shut; our Karikaturmuseum Krems guide covers what to see inside.

In the old town, museumkrems at Körnermarkt 14 is one of Lower Austria's oldest city museums and opens daily from 10am to 6pm. Farther out, the baroque abbey of Stift Göttweig at Furth bei Göttweig sits across the Danube and makes a natural second stop if you are driving back toward St. Pölten.

Should the Landesgalerie be your first Kunstmeile stop?

Yes, if you want a single anchor for the Kunstmeile day. Arrive near the 10am opening, see the Landesgalerie Niederösterreich while it is quiet, then take the combined Kunstmeile ticket across the square to the Kunsthalle and, if the shows appeal, the Karikaturmuseum.

The main trade-off is time. The combined ticket only pays off if you give the ticket two or three stops, and the Monday closure means you should arrange your museum day for Tuesday to Sunday. Build the old town walk and the Danube bank into the same afternoon rather than trying to split Krems across two visits.
