Gmunden sightseeing: how to plan the lakefront and old town

Gmunden's sights sit close together, yet they keep very different hours. The Esplanade promenade along Traunsee is free and open around the clock, while Schloss Ort on its island shuts at 4 p.m. and stays closed on Tuesdays. The carillon at the town hall only plays in certain hours and falls silent from January 6 until spring.

Several stops cost nothing: the lakeside walk and the town hall square are both free. Others need planning. Schloss Ort asks a €5 adult maintenance fee in cash, with a tower tour for €3 more. The Gmundner Keramik Manufaktur runs fixed-time factory tours with limited places, so book ahead and build your arrival around a departure slot.

Above town, Grünberg rises straight from Gmunden, with a terrace inn, a treetop path and about 20 kilometers of paths at the top. The alm and treetop path operate only from spring to autumn, so check the cable car calendar before you go. Indoors, the Kammerhofmuseum holds the town's green-flamed Hafner pottery, and the parish church on Kirchenplatz makes a quiet stop between services.

The Esplanade costs nothing and is open at any hour: a level, paved walk along Traunsee between Café Kandur and the Gmunden Yacht Club, shaded by two rows of chestnut trees. Allow 15 minutes to an hour. The Rathaus on Rathausplatz is also free, and its ceramic carillon is the reason to linger.
