Klagenfurt sightseeing: plan the cathedral, canal and lakeside stops

Klagenfurt's sights split neatly between the old city center and the Wörthersee shore, and the distance between them shapes your day. Downtown, the cathedral and the Landhaus sit within a short walk of each other, while the Lendkanal runs flat for 4 km from the Lendhafen out to Schloss Maria-Loretto on the lake.

Start with the cathedral if time is short: roughly 25 minutes covers the three stacked galleries, the 18th-century ceiling paintings, the 1726 pulpit and Daniel Gran's high altar. The Gurk Diocesan Museum next door, holding a 1170 stained glass window, is easy to miss.

Heraldry and baroque room lovers should give the Landhaus 45 to 60 minutes for the Großer Wappensaal and its 665 coats of arms. Minimundus, on the southern edge of town, is the family draw, and its 2026 season closes on November 1.

The canal walk from Lendhafen suits a half day on foot or by bike, with a summer electric boat offering just two departures a day. Modern art fits a spare hour at MMKK, though it closes on Mondays and between exhibitions.

What to reserve before you arrive

Only the Lendkanal boat really rewards advance planning: the summer electric boat makes just two departures a day, so reserve if that crossing is part of your plan. The canal path itself needs nothing, and you can walk or cycle it instead.

Minimundus takes no booking, but buy your ticket well before the desk closes an hour before the park, and check the monthly hours for your date. The Landhaus charges admission and gives 50% off with the Wörthersee Plus Card.

Seasonal closures to check first

Minimundus shuts for the year on November 1, so families with children aged 6 to 15 should aim for an earlier visit; entry is €22 for adults and €12 for ages 6 to 15, with under-5s free. MMKK can close between exhibitions, so confirm a show is running before you set out.

At the Landhaus, Mondays close from late October to March, so schedule the Wappensaal for another weekday in winter. The cathedral has no such gaps.
